1940 Bantam CV Touring Car
The American Austin Car Company built modified Austin Sevens
with an American flare starting in 1929. Due to slow sales, the maker was
sold to Roy Evans three years later and went bankrupt just two years after
that, in 1934. The maker was reintroduced in 1934 as American Bantam in
1936. Cars were sold but not enought tokeep the company open and the doors
closed at its Butler, Pennsylvania, plant in 1940.
Total production was probably less than 20,000.
It must be noted, though, that American Bantam designed and built the first
successful Jeep for the U.S. Army.
This model rides on a toy-like chassis with a
wheelbase of only 75". Powering the little convertible coupe
is a 4 cylinder engine based on the British-built Austin Seven, but with
22bhp.
