1953 Volkswagen Beetle
It does kind of resemble a black sheep Porsche 356, and it should as both
have the same creators. Not to mention the same engine placement and driven
wheels. This was Adolf Hitler's "Strength-through-joy" ("Kraft
durch Freude") automobile. Mobility for the masses. Always a classic,
but even more so today now that the NEW Beetle (below) has caused
a euphoria in the car-buying market? Why not? Anything is possible. To
sound like McDonalds billions and billions served, the production figures
for the original Beetle, first put into production in 1945 under British
supervision, are millions and millions. More millions than any other car
in the world! The 10-millionth was built way back in 1965 and the last
German-built Beetle appeared in 1978. Though production continued in Mexico
and Brazil, total figures are over 21 million!
1998 Volkswagen Beetle
Most cars of recent memory that caused this much of a craze and buying
frenzy were big dollar sports cars. Remember the commotion caused by the
Dodge Viper, Plymouth Prowler, and the recent German trio of convertible
speedsters? Wanna pay three times the MSRP buddy? The 1998 Beetle is actually
an affordable car for the masses, though, the waiting lists are long. Looks
like Volkswagen will be making a comeback in the US afterall. Will it be
the four decade success the original Beetle was? Time will tell.
